IV National Independent Potter Meeting

He Independent National Potter Meeting has brought together, on three occasions, pottery artisans from various areas of the country to collectively celebrate the wonder of a trade that spans the history of Mexico.

After 3 meetings held in San Miguel Tenextatiloyán, Puebla, in charge of the Pottery Studies Center, in 2018, Innovating Tradition enthusiastically received the task of organizing the IV Independent Potter Meeting in Oaxaca, a state with enormous pottery tradition and strength.

We welcome with open arms seventy-nine artisans and craftswomen from twenty-five pottery communities from Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, State of Mexico, Puebla, Michoacán, Morelos, Guerrero, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas. we meet dAugust 15-17 in San Bartolo Coyotepec, to share our experiences and knowledge of clay, to learn from each other and to delve into some of the complex issues that affect the trade that gives life to the land.

During the Encounter we work with clay, talk in groups, visit workshops in Coyotepec and, of course, enjoy delicious Oaxacan food.

In addition to a revitalizing and transformative experience, this was a very important step to strengthen the pottery community of Oaxaca and Mexico in general.

This was something fascinating for me because we were sharing our techniques (...) and there I could see how big the world of pottery is.

—Elia Mateo, San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca.
