La alfarer\u00eda ha sido un elemento esencial en la vida de los oaxaque\u00f1os desde los tiempos de los primeros Zapotecos. Elaborada por las manos de artesanas h\u00e1biles desde 1,900 A.C<\/strong>., sigue siendo fabricada por artesanas ind\u00edgenas por todo el estado. La herencia din\u00e1mica de este arte rural es uno de los grandes tesoros de Oaxaca. Es un nexo vivo a cuatro milenios de historia y la encarnaci\u00f3n de doscientas generaciones de dise\u00f1o, pr\u00e1cticas ecol\u00f3gicas y conocimiento ind\u00edgena. Sin embargo, a\u00fan en Oaxaca, esta alfarer\u00eda es casi desconocida y las alfareras invisibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This first book<\/strong>, written by Eric Mindling<\/a> <\/strong>with a prologue by Gustavo Perez<\/a><\/strong> (Edici\u00f3n 2011), es una vista panor\u00e1mica de la alfarer\u00eda tradicional en Oaxaca, en m\u00e1s de sesenta y cinco comunidades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire and Clay<\/strong> pays homage to the wisdom of the potters and is a journey into the depths of this ancient art. Mindling explains the knowledge in traditional pottery, its economic, social and cultural importance, provides tools to understand and value this trade in all its complexity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire and Clay<\/strong> offers us a pioneering perspective on this ancient trade and the people who work it. For the first time, the rich and diverse world of Oaxacan pottery is presented. This book covers the lives and work of some four thousand potters<\/strong> in sixty-eight towns<\/strong>, where they are spoken ten languages<\/strong>. It also examines the evolution of ceramics from the first pieces that were imitations of bules, to the work of today's potters who adapt to a constantly changing world. The book also demonstrates how this apparently simple and rustic pottery is in fact a model of wise design. Not only in the shape and consistency of a pot or pitcher, but also in the way that the creation of this pottery works in balance with the environment and the social environment of the potters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are not aware of recent books that address this important field of Mexican art, even less from the perspective that is proposed, so it has become an obligatory reference. From the research work, a unique collection was put together that includes pieces collected in almost all regions of the state. This collection makes up la exposici\u00f3n Barro y Fuego<\/mark><\/a> that accompanies the book and that has been exhibited in different spaces in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pr\u00e1cticamente no existen libros sobre la alfarer\u00eda de Oaxaca, por lo que este libro llena un hueco importante y nos aporta herramientas de interpretaci\u00f3n para valorar la actividad alfarera en toda su complejidad: la gran diversidad de tipolog\u00edas morfol\u00f3gicas, la exquisita funcionalidad de las piezas y la simplicidad inteligente de sus dise\u00f1os. En \u00e9l, se comentan paso a paso los diferentes procesos de elaboraci\u00f3n. Se explican las formas y \u00e9ticas antiguas de trabajar, que hoy en d\u00eda llamamos sustentables, y los contextos socio-econ\u00f3micos de donde surgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, it deals with how the life of the potters is changing and the challenges that modernity poses. This book is testimony to the way of life of forgotten or underappreciated teachers. Celebrate those artisans with simple tools and skilled hands, acrobats of flames, boiling smoke, and sweaty knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
